Behavioral healthcare – the diverse set of professional services provided to patients suffering from mental illness, addiction, or who are in recovery – is a particularly ethically fraught branch of the medical enterprise. This article reviews philosophical theories about the nature of mental disorders and surveys ethical issues in both clinical and research settings.
